The Pebble-Bed Modular Reactor is probably the best-known advanced reactor. It is inherently safe, requiring no containment structure, and is the first fireproof graphite-moderated reactor. It does have several drawbacks compared to other advanced reactors, notably that it cannot recycle waste, its waste cannot be recycled by any currently-available process, and it produces significantly more waste than even 1960s-era reactors, but it is far better than continued use of fossil fuels.
